Wow. Yosemite: the Park and its Resources (1987) by Linda W. Greene tells us almost everything we ever wanted to know about Yosemite National Park.

Full citation
Linda Wedel Greene (1947-), Yosemite: the Park and its Resources; a History of the Discovery, Management, and Physical Development of Yosemite National Park, California (Denver: National Park Service, 1987).

Scope
This work is a blow by blow historical record of humans in Yosemite, starting with the original Indians but focused on the complex history of Western development of Yosemite from its inception to 1960.

Green's massive work follows the evolution of many topics of interest to backpackers. Trail construction and the history of various sites are threaded through her narrative. I find it valuable and informative to consolidate these accounts.

I've drawn together and consolidated her accounts of John Muir, the formation of Yosemite National Park, and the construction of the John Muir Trail in this article:

John Muir, the establishment of Yosemite Nation Park, and construction of the John Muir Trail.

Green also follows the history of various sites important to us today. Tuolumne Meadows is one such site.

History of Tuolumne Meadows.

We will continue to fish in the deep waters of history that Green gives us, to bring to the surface tidbits about Yosemite's history that will help us put our efforts and views into an even longer context.

This work is, according to its author...

"...intended as a complete narrative history of the park, providing basic reference material for planners, resource managers, and interpreters to facilitate the proper care, interpretation, and management of cultural properties within Yosemite National Park."

Inform Us
"The Park" contains a tremendous amount of information of interest to backpackers about the evolution Yosemite. Green deals with such topics as the of lines of trail across Yosemite, and I've isolated her research on the construction of the John Muir Trail and the History of Tuolumne Meadows and posted it as topical articles to make this information more accessible to backpackers.
Green presents both a broad outline of Yosemite's physical infrastructure and administrative policies, and a detailed history of events and developments.

Tidbits
I've always wondered when they set up the torch-cut steel signs. Early '50s. The old license plates for snow travel in Jack Main Canyon? 1940s.

For current interesting information and facts about Yosemite National Park we refer to the

YOSEMITE PARK STATISTICS

The Beauty and the Beast
The beauty of Yosemite draws attention sufficient to physically damage the beauty and spiritually damage the experience. The National Park service attempts to juggle these competing interests.

I explain my perspective on the conflicting social and physical realities of the small city that grows in Yosemite Valley every Summer in my descriptions of the Golden Triangle Route around the Heart of Yosemite National Park.

We'll have much more on this when we complete the pages for the Golden Triangle Route around Yosemite in the trail guide.

The National Park Service and Yosemite have responded to these conflicts between man and nature with quotas and restrictions that are reflected in Yosemite's Permit Policies.

 YOSEMITE PERMIT POLICIES

Yosemite measures trail use under the current permit system by counting various types of hiker encounters on the trail to determine the quality of the wilderness experience.

I found these numbers to be interesting and informative, and somewhat representative of my July experiences. But not my October experiences. October sees more bears on the North Backcountry trails than backpackers.
