The Spanish Sierra Nevada

California's Sierra Nevada is the namesake of the original Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, located in Southern Spain. Located in Granada and Almería in Spain, the Spanish Sierra Nevada contains Mulhacén, Spain's highest point at 11,411 ft.

You can get a great view of these beautiful mountains on The Mountains of the Sierra Nevada, a beautiful site put up by the Spanish Highs Mountain Guides.

A different approach

On this fine site we don't just get a glimpse of the beauties of the original Sierra Nevada. Interestingly enough, we can also see many of the cultural differences between the European and the American approach to the Wilderness and the Mountains on this fine site.

Spanish Highs Mountain Guides is representative of the profession of Mountain Guiding first nurtured in the Alps, and subsequently spread to Europe's high places.

Spanish Highs Mountain Guides offers professionally guided hikes, climbs, scrambles, snow expeditions, mountain biking, and treks, in additon to a wide range of classes and seminars to enhance your visit to the Spanish Sierra Nevada.

The Europeans have developed Mountaineering and Wilderness exploration into a highly respected craft. Mountain guiding is a craft in Europe that commands respect as well as supporting the mountain guides.

Having an estabished guiding craft provides a benefit to the European outdoor backpacker/hiker/climber sub-culture as well as to European society in general.

Over here in the USA the best outdoorsmen scramble for limited sponsorships and struggle to find a product-niche that will support the practice of their craft.

Dream Trip

It would be a dream trip to make a European Backpacker's Tour. Not as one of those stupid college student "backpackers" who flood  European capitols every Summer, but a backpacking trip to tie together and explore Europe's finest mountain ranges, national parks, and the many other natural wonders of Europe.

Imagine hitting the European backcountry when Europeans are heading out to the mountains for their Summer trips. What a blast!

I can easily imagine a European Backpacking Trip that includes throughly exploring Spain's Sierra Nevada followed by a visit to the Pyrenees. Next would be a big backpacking trip following Italy's Alps across the mountains across to Switzerland. This would be followed by a visit to Roald Admundson's Norway and some backpacking across his home range.

Between The Sierra Nevada, the Swiss Alps and Norway lay a number of historic rivers, including the Rhone, Po, and Danube.

London, Paris, Madrid and Rome? Who needs 'em! Backpacking Europe's natural beauties would be my dream trip.

I strongly suggest the you check out The Mountains of the Sierra Nevada. But beware, this beautiful site may whet your curiosity enough to make you to fly to Spain for an understanding of both Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges.

Here's a note from Richard, a guide at Spanish Highs Mountain Guides:
