Rock Lake to Jenkins Canyon
The Tahoe to Yosemite Trail across Carson Iceberg Wilderness

Rock Lake sits 4.74 miles South of the Silver Valley Trailhead. A lightly forested low rise to the South of the lake offers many fine campsites that are far enough from the mosquitos living in the verdant grasses around the lake, and close enough to easily obtain water.

The trail junction at Rock Lake is not listed on the USGS topo map series, but is depicted on the Carson Iceberg Wilderness Forest Service Maps. The trail South runs down to Elephant Rock and Elephant Lake. Road access at Elephant Lake can be your destination, or you can loop back up to the Silver Valley Trailhead.

6.64 miles South of Rock Lake on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail we encounter the Jenkins Canyon trail junction, where we turn South to climb over to the South side of the Carson Iceberg Wilderness, and access to Highway 108.

Or we can continue up Highland Creek to Highland Lakes and maybe even push our trip South to Sonora Pass along the Pacific Crest Trail.

Between Rock Lake and Jenkins Canyon there's lots of fine terrain described on the trail guide, linked to below. And the trail guide covers the terrain from Jenkins Canyon to Highland Lakes, in case you want to hike a medium distance loop or if you choose to continue South along the Pacific Crest Trail rather than the TYT.

Check out this Carson Iceberg topo map to see the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail across the Carson Iceberg Wilderness as well as your options to hike medium and long distance loops, and your potential options to mix up the TYT and PCT as you hike across the length of Carson Iceberg Wilderness. It's a big map. Just add imagination and effort, and nothing that happens will surprise me.

You can add information about this section of the TYT through the comments link below, or register and post up your own notes, images, videos about this area in this Forum.

Fishing on Spicer Meadow Reservoir & Highland Creek

Heyyyyy how's it going!? Just wanted to email you to let you know I was back on the TYT last weekend! I really really really wanted to get back to Highland Creek because it was amazing trout fishing. The best on my trip.
A friend and I drove down highway 108 and turned on the Clark Fork Campground road and drove up the forest roads to the County Line Trailhead. We night hiked from the trailhead past Sword/Lost Lakes and made it to the Highland Creek camp around 1130P!

Much to my disappointment and my partners, Highland Creek was all but a trickle and all the big fish were gone. We didn't even have any luck in the reservoir!

Had a great time though and saw a bear near the trail that comes down from Rock Lake. Never had any trouble in camp, but that was the first time I've seen a bear while backpacking, even on the entire TYT last year!

It was really great to drive past St. Mary's pass and drive the road I hitchhiked last year. Was even better to meet the trail junction at Highland Creek Trail/Sword Lake Trail by the bridge. I almost kissed the bridge. Also great to see some of the "i" TYT markers. Felt like I was coming home! Anyways, hope all is well with you. Thank you for sharing this beautiful trail!!
