Which Way South from the Tahoe Basin?

This requires some study. The PCT is well-grooved, while the TYT has segments of significantly degraded trail. The TYT may be very challenging or you may find it simple; wisdom requires we inform ourselves as well as possible, and be ready for either experience.

Nonetheless, hiking through the Carson Gap we decide upon continuing South on the Tahoe to Yosemite or the Pacific Crest Trail.
The Pacific Crest Trail will take us along the Crestline and Eastern Flank of the Sierra South from Carson Pass on Highway 88 to Ebbetts Pass on Highway 4.
The Tahoe to Yosemite Trail connects these same highways, but from the Carson Gap to Lake Alpine, dropping much further down in elevation as we hike South along the Western Flank of the Sierra.

The trail guide index allows us to investigate and compare both routes with maps, mileages, and trail guide information illustrated with lots of pictures and videos.

The Carson Gap trail guide page has a discussion about the significant physical differences between these routes.

Another entry in this forum also describes the differences between the TY and PCT routes between Carson Pass and Ebbetts Pass.

If you have any comments, questions, experiences, or information to offer about the differences between these routes, post them through the comments link below.

Refer to the Trail Forums for current updates on each of these trail's routes, and to post up your comments and experiences on them individually:

TYT: Carson Gap to Lake Alpine

PCT: Carson Pass to Ebbetts Pass
