Backpacking Socks

As High Sierra backpackers display a lot of range in foot wear, so too in socks. Sock companies have reciprociated, producing a wide range of socking solutions.

A Thought: When I test and purchase my boots I bring in the sets of inserts I am going to use, along with what I figure will be the primary sock used with that boot. Summer? A medium to light sock. Winter? Heavy socks with maybe even a liner sock...

High Sierra Backpacker's Four Season Gear List

Backpacker's Gear List: Boots & Feet

I typically bring the wool sock for the Backpacking Season. Light for Summer, medium for Spring and Fall, and heavy for Winter. Sock liners come along during some Winter trips.

I will use cotton socks during Heat Waves! They are so much more comfortable during hot conditions.

I will generally bring three pairs of trail socks for long backpacking trips. Two will be in daily use, generally switching from my feet to drying & bleaching on the top of my pack every two to three hours, and back to the feet again. The third pair is held in reserve for wash days and emergencies.

Typically, one of my 3 pairs is lighter or heavier than my other 2 pairs of standard season-specific choices. That would be a pair of heavier socks during Summer trips, or a pair of lighter socks during Winter. These are for those Summertime cold snaps and Wintertime warm ups, respectively. Shit always happens, things always change...

Then I have my "camp" socks. I generally bring a set of fleece socks, or maybe a pair of those fat, thick, wigwam cotton socks. They are quite comfy in my comfy camp shoes after a twenty mile day!

So I have socks for the season and trail, and socks for comfort in camp.
