Amador Trails Info: The Tahoe to Yosemite Trail & Mokelumne Wilderness Volunteers

In August of 2013 I received multiple reports of vandalism along the pristine and remote unmaintained section of the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail route in Summit City Canyon in the Mokelumne Wilderness. This provoked me to report the incident to the Amador Ranger Station of the El Dorado National Forest, which administers the area.

I was directed to Trails when I contacted the Amador Ranger District.

A brief conversation with Ranger Cecilia Reed, the Trails Ranger, convinced me we have an excellent advocate for the preservation of the unique mix of terrain and usage that divides the very busy Carson Pass Management Area around Round Top and the Sisters from the remote isolation we find just a short ways South down Summit City Creek's unmaintained trail in Summit City Creek's deep granite canyon on the South side of Round Top and The Sisters.

This is a special place.

In discussion with Ranger Reed I obtained good information about upcoming and recent work along the unmaintained section of the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail down Summit City Creek to the brushy manzanita covered terrain to the South and above Camp Irene on the way to climb Mount Reba.

North Side of the Unmaintained Section

During the years between 2004 and 2013 the maintained section of the trail from the Summit City Canyon trail junction below Fourth of July Lake down to Telephone Gulch was not maintained and quickly reverted into a route, rather than a trail. This segment of trail has been blocked by downed trees, washouts, and plant growth, among other reversions towards a natural state.

Ranger Reed informed me that this section will be opened up and maintained by trail crew during the end of the 2013 and beginning of the 2014 trail crew seasons.

This will reduce the length of the unmaintained trail by 3.23 miles, bringing the unmaintained section down to 6.46 miles from 9.69.

South Side of the Unmaintained Section

During the last five or six years there has been some substantial rock work above the South shore of Camp Irene, but as I have noted in the guide, the manzanita is dense. Ranger Reed related plans to clear the trail through the manzinita on the mountainside South of Camp Irene.

Within the Unmaintained Section

Ranger Reed reported on a five person trail crew made up of members of the Mokelumne Wilderness Volunteers that went

Mokelumne Wilderness Volunteers at Camp Irene, 2013.

"...brushing & logging out the Evergreen & Camp Irene Trials to the greatest extent possible in a 4 day trip.  So they didn't make it all the way to Horse Canyon, but the trails are much improved."

"The Mokelumne Wilderness Volunteers are a wonderfully dedicated group that help us manage our wilderness."

"If anyone is interested in volunteering for the US Forest Service please send them my way, our annual training takes place in May."

"The next volunteer event will be in the Munson Meadow area at the end of August."
