Oh, My Aching City...in the Wilderness

Yosemite National Park Announces the Launch of a Pilot Daily Lottery for Camp 4 Campground,
Yosemite National Park, April 16, 2019.

MAIN POINTS

Lottery Reservations
“Yosemite National Park announces that a new pilot lottery program for Camp 4 Campground will launch on Tuesday, May 21, 2019.

Daily Lottery
“This daily lottery system will be operated through Recreation.gov and will help improve the visitor experience at Camp 4 Campground.”

Too Many People
“Camp 4 Campground is a walk-in campground and the only first-come, first-served campground in Yosemite Valley. Visitor demands for a camping space at Camp 4 have been increasing over the past decade and the current registration system no longer serves the public and meets the needs of current campers.”

Too Many People
Yosemite Valley City
Under the current system, campers have to line up and wait for a first-come, first-served camping space to open. In order to wait for one of the available spaces to open up, campers line up all day, and sometime the night before, with the hopes of getting a camping space. This system is inefficient and has contributed to wildlife issues due to improper food storage, out of bounds camping, and conflicts between campers.”

Like Half Dome
“...test a new pilot program from late May to early September, using a daily lottery system similar to the Half Dome daily lottery.”

Note

As of this date I can’t find anything about Camp 4 in the above recreation.gov sites, but that’s likely because they don’t plan on rolling it out until May 21. But I had to check!

Bottom Line

Yosemite is treating the symptoms of the problem, because addressing the cause of the crushing crowds in Yosemite is above their rank. Yosemite is now surrounded and accessed by a scale of population that does not just change the experience in the Valley and on its Trails, but threatens the very climate and environment that Yosemite, and the rest of the Wilderness running North and South along the Sierra Crest from Yosemite’s central position along the High Sierra Crestline, depends on to support their specific blends of forest stratification.

All Fronts
Overpopulation itself has physically, frontally assaulted all the physical aspects of Yosemite, filling up the valley and trails, transforming wilderness into an urban mediated experience, while the greenhouse gas byproducts of this vast consumer population’s vast consumptions have already changed the weather beyond the tolerances of the established forests and ecosystems all over the West Coast, and especially in the High Sierra, which are rapidly changing, most noticeably through fire, in response.

Megacity Madness
in the Wilderness
Since the weight of this vast population on nature is sufficient to change the patterns of the climate and weather encompassing the world, the Western and Southwestern United States, and finally altering the seasons in our Sierra, I understand that clogging the freeways of LA’s vast megacity, or creating vast lines to Camp 4’s Ranger Booth, are only minor byproducts of our deadly overdevelopment.
