Polar vortex defies climate change in the Southeast,
Dartmouth College, February 13, 2018.

"U.S. warming hole."

"During the winter and spring, the U.S. warming hole sits over the Southeast, as the polar vortex allows arctic air to plunge into the region."

"...since the late 1950's, the polar vortex has been cooling the southeastern U.S. during the winter."

"Daily temperatures in the warming hole cooled by an average of 1.2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1958, compared to a global average warming of about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the same period."

My anecdotal observations from here are that the seasonal profile of Arctic cooling and warming each year has changed significantly over the last 40  years, and these changes have accelerated over the past 20 years.

The most significant change is in the overall "character" of the Arctic during Winter. It no longer does what I refer to as, "spinning down," down into a cold, tight, spinning vortex of cold. It has slowed down and warmed up.

This has significantly affected all its interconnected pieces, being the movement of huge masses of air across Siberia, and those coming up the East Coast of Asia. The warmer, calmer Arctic Winter affects other global circulation and thermodynamic patterns, affecting both the Hadly circulation and the various trans-Pacific "occilations" affecting weather formation.

The warm Arctic has reshaped Northern Hemisphere Winter Weather Patters.

I cannot emphasize enough the gravity of these changes.

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
