MAIN POINTS

SARM Bacteria
"Our findings highlight the fact that antibiotic resistance can sometimes effectively be hidden: in other words, it looks like you're dealing with an infection that should be treatable with a given antibiotic, but that may not be the case."

Why
"...disease-causing bacteria carry antibiotic resistance genes that are dormant as a result of a genetic mutation. During screening, the bacteria appears susceptible to antibiotics."

Reversion
"...the effect of the mutation was quickly lost when the bacteria was exposed to antibiotics."

"...a second mutation...restored the pathogen to its original, drug-resistant state."

Deadly but Common Subject Bacteria Tested
S. aureus
"...analysed nearly 1,500 samples of S. aureus - a bacteria that is commonly found on the skin but can cause more serious infections and toxic-shock syndrome. It is best known in its highly drug-resistant form, MRSA, which frequently causes a potentially-lethal hospital-acquired infection."

SARM
"...the scientists refer to the process by which the drug resistance gene is de-activated as SARM - which stands for Silencing of Antibiotic Resistance by Mutation."

Numbers
"...three per cent of the samples had the silenced resistance gene and were tested as being susceptible to antibiotic treatment."

SARM Clear & Present Threat
SARM is, "...relatively common in bacteria such as S. aureus, and therefore have significant potential to adversely affect antibiotic treatment."

Look and We Will Find
"...it is likely that this process also occurs on other bacteria."

Why
"...the overuse of antibiotics worldwide has accelerated the development of drug resistant pathogens, the so called superbugs."

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

I NEED HELP!
If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
