Subzero Life Exists & Persists until Compressed into Ice

Life on the ice,
University of York, December 20, 2017.

Our last news on microbiology showed that microbes inhabiting harsh environments, such as Antarctica, have the capacity to pull their nutrition out of the atmosphere itself. Antarctic microbes feed themselves by breaking carbon, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide out of the air itself.

Amazing Life: Microbes Live on Air

This latest research above, “...has directly observed microbial activity in Antarctic and Arctic snow...” itself, which could have implications for our interpretation of our past and therefore, our understanding of our present atmosphere.

This snow-bound microbial life could have added unexpected CO2 to our ancient ice core samples, leading researchers to distort the relationship between atmospheric chemistry and temperatures to minimize the impact of lower ancient CO2 levels, if their measurements were tainted by microbiological CO2 inputs.

If so tainted, cooler ancient temps would be associated with lower levels of CO2 than believed, and temp increases we've seen are associated with lower levels of increased CO2 than we believed. In other words, the presence of this extra source of microbial CO2 in the ice has made our atmosphere-CO2 association “moderately” more optimistic than the reality of the "very long-term" relationship between atmospheric CO2 and global temps.

If this research above is correct, we've been looking at the long-term relationship between CO2 and air temperatures through 'rose-colored" snow, so to speak...

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
