Rock Island Pass between Hoover and Yosemite Wilderness

Rock Island Pass Yosemite Miles Sign

Editor's Note

Rock Island Pass at 10160 feet at the Top of the Hoover Wilderness sports a, "classic," Yosemite Boundary Sign at our entry into the North Yosemite Backcountry.

Trail Information
The next trail boundary sign like the one above is where our route over Bond Pass on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail brings us into the top of Jack Main Canyon in the most Northwestern Corner of Yosemit National Park. That's a couple of hiking days North of our current position. Check out the trail guide here;

Bond Pass

This map, combined with the maps covering the Twin Lakes Loop, can give us a pretty good idea about the composition of the North Yosemite Backcountry, as it all feeds the:

Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River

We can see that exploring the terrain along our Twin Lakes trail route, let alone exploring the broader extent of this, "North Yosemite Backcountry," requires lifetimes of study.

Trail Guide
Kerrick Canyon-Seavy Pass Trail Junction

From there, at the next trail junction down Kerrick Canyon, we wil be hiking South on the Bensen Lake Loop along with the combined routes of the PCT-TYT, until the point where we hike North in Matterhorn Canyon, up towards Burro Pass, from the point where the PCT-TYT turns South for the climb out of Matterhorn Canyon up to Miller Lake, and Tuolumne Meadows, eventually.

These miles from the next trail junction down Kerrick Canyon, to that Matterhorn Canyon trail junction where we continue North up Matterhorn Canyon, are registered on the trail guide's miles and elevations pages:

Sonora Pass to Tuolumne Meadows Miles and Elevations

Starting South out of Kennedy Meadows Pack Station, instead of Sonora Pass:

Kennedy Meadows to Bond Pass & into Yosemite's NW corner, & into Jack Main Canyon
