 Man and Nature

January, 2019

Happenings in the relationship between Man and Nature affecting our hike down life's trail through both worlds. We study both the reality created by humans and the uncreated reality reflected in, and tended by Nature.

The vast majority of our reporting on Nature comes from the American Association of Scientists summarizations of each day's bounty of the peer-reviewed research published by academic institutions and journals around the world.

Our focus is on everything, every living thing and natural process that we will encounter hiking from Lake Tahoe to Mount Whitney, and out the Portal. The birds, the bees, the water, the trees, the granite in the ground under our feet, and the stars in the sky at night.

Our goal of tracking the status and trajectory of everything we encounter and engage as we hike through the Natural World then brings into play everything it takes to put and keep us out there, which covers a plethora of backpacker-related safety, health, fitness, gear, skills, observation, navigation, and, of course, weather and climate issues.

Finally, the most deciseive factor we track that predicts the current status and future trajectory of the health and well-being of Nature are the behaviors, science, culture, and arts of Mankind, who are both one of Nature's greatest and worse creations at the same time. We're going to try to make things better at the bottom-line.

We track the alingment of forces affecting the Nature of our hike through Life on this planet.

You will get the latest news from the forefronts of Climate, Bio, Astro, and the hard sciences affecting our engagement with Nature here, typically two days before hitting the corporate press, but a very long time after they've already deeply affected Man & Nature, if the grimness of our purposeful ecological collapse even comes across the pages of the corporate press at all.

You'll get the real deal here.

A Series of Lows & Their Fronts

The NOAA Surface Forecast on the 5th, below, predicting three big storms lining-up across the Pacific today has played out nearly as expected:

Though these Lows are lined-up, the increasing tendency of Lows to travel South to North as the Arctic Vortex weakens, as well as along their traditional West to East tracks, makes continued instability our only certainty.

The weakening Arctic Vortex seems to be affecting both the pace and trajectory of Central and North Pacific Lows; they wander about, and even track to the NW during the depths of Winter.

Stationary Front Along the WHOLE NW Coast of USA:

The Long Tail of a Front Line descending South from the Lows over Seattle, that we mentioned yesterday, below, have not moved for a over a day. Stationary Fronts like this typically bring bucketfulls of precip...

So, not only do we have a series of powerful Lows and their associated Fronts lining-up in their march East, towards us, across the North Pac (see graphic below), that weird elongated Low that formed-up over Seatlle and Vancover Island, along with its Front tailing down along the whole coast of the NW corner of the US, are not yet moving, after a over a full day in the same positions.

Seasonal Update

A Series of Storms lining up on the West Coast

After the elongated Low covering the Northwest Corner of the United States passes to the North and East, the next Low to hit the NW Corner of the US will have two more deep lows following it across the North Pacific, lining up a series of three storms across the North Pacific by the 9th. Below, NOAA depicts what the North Pacific is supposed to look like at 4 am on the 9th of Jan:
North Pacific Weather Map showing three storms lining up on January 9, 2019, NWS.
The exact behavior of these approaching Low Pressure Zones (again, the above map is today's forecast for the 9th), especially their trajectory across the West Coast of the USA, will depend on the configuration of High Pressure off and on our Western Shore. (US Map) That configuration will determine exactly where these Low Pressure Zones hit.
Currently, the, "elongated" Low(s) (map) sitting over Seatlle are presently being pushed North along the Western US by big onshore Highs, though the precipitation along their attached front line, (which is running down the West Coast) is moving East, bringing precip to N Cal and snow to the N Sierra.

Our last snowpack reading on the 3rd revealed 70% of a normal snowpack for January 3. Our next reading after this series of storms should put us on or near a normal snowpack, even if High Pressure diverts the majority of the activity around to our North.

Potentially large snowfalls are on the way... Well, somebody is going to get hit...
