Observing & Measuring Universal Expansion

This illustration shows the three basic steps astronomers use to calculate how fast the universe expands over time, a value called the Hubble constant. NASA, ESA and A. Feild (STScI). Big Image.

Double Bubble Trouble

Mystery of the Universe's Expansion Rate Widens with New Hubble Data,
NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, April 25, 2019.

Hubble Bubble Trouble
Hubble's found a, "...discrepancy between the two key techniques for measuring the universe's expansion rate."

The Trouble
We can now see that the Bubble of our Early Universe was expanding more slowly than its current expansion rate, which none of our current theories or understanding can account for, which is called, "Double Bubble Trouble," in my book.

Faster & Faster
"Hubble measurements suggest a faster expansion rate in the modern universe than expected, based on how the universe appeared more than 13 billion years ago."

New Darkness
These, "variable," rates of expansion were once only beyond our view, now this unexpected differential is merely beyond our understanding.

New Flashlight
Better Batteries?
A, "new physics may be needed to explain the mismatch."

What Hubble Did
This new Hubble study added a level of precision to, "local," measurements of the expansion of the universe, a degree of precision that confirms there is indeed a big difference between the current rate of universal expansion and the rate of expansion after the Big Bang, as measured in the universe's background radiation by the Planck Satellite in 2013..

"...reduced the uncertainty in their Hubble constant value to 1.9% from an earlier estimate of 2.2%."

Viva La Difference!

New Universe
"The new estimate of the Hubble constant is 74 kilometers (46 miles) per second per megaparsec."

"...expanding at a 9% faster rate than the (earlier) prediction...(of) Planck's observations..."

Old Universe
"...expanding at a...67 kilometers (41.6 miles) per second per megaparsec, which comes from Planck's observations of the early universe, coupled with our present understanding of the universe."

"Both values have been tested multiple ways."

"Dark energy may also be the reason for the universe's accelerated expansion today."

"Dark Energy"
Note: Not to be harsh, but the term, "dark energy," (as well as dark matter), and the term, "cosmological constant," were all themselves coined to describe the unseen/unknown causes of the observed effects of our expanding universe, all seeking to describe the unseen causes of this expansion as, "dark energy." (more)
In the case of, "dark matter," this term merely describes the widespread observed effect of gravity without any associated mass, an effect that we see all around us in the universe.
Likewise, the term, "dark energy," still perfectly labels the unknown motive force behind universal expansion, even at a variety of rates, as well as it did when we believed the expansion to be constant. You can replace the term, "dark energy," with the word, "something," and it has the same effect. For example:

Placeholder Words
"Something" is making our universe expand is as true as saying; "Dark energy is making our universe expand." "Dark Matter," "Dark Energy," and even the term, "cosmological constant," have all been, and still are, "placeholder," words for forces of which we can see their massive effects, (galactic cohesion-universal expansion), but not the forces causing these effects. Thus our use of the word, "dark."

Balance of Power
Our ignorance has not been diminished by this study, but expanded. This study has added just enough to our knowledge to once again show us how much larger our ignorance is than our knowledge.

What Time is It?
The interesting thing about this discrepancy is how it affects what, "time," it is. Our current understanding of the Age of the Universe is dependent upon its assumed rate of expansion since the Big Bang, meaning how long it has taken to blow a bubble this big. That depends on how fast this bubble is expanding.

Age? OK,
But What I Wanna Know, is, Who's Your Daddy?
If the universe is expanding slower than we believed, then it took longer than we thought for the bubble to expand this far, making the universe older than we believed.
If the universe is expanding faster than we believed, in this case by 9% more, since some point in time after the big bang laid out its background microwave radiation, then the universe could be up to 9% younger than we thought.

Currently, we put the bubble at a diameter of 14 billion light years, but that's certainly subject to change now, as they untangle the discrepency in expansion found above.

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
