We hike South on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail 3.08 miles from the Grizzly Peak trail junction over Bond Pass to join with the PCT in the top of Jack Main Canyon in the very Northwestern corner of the North Yosemite Backcountry.

From Grizzly Peak we've 1.08 miles South to the next Horse Meadow trail junction on the North side of Summit Meadow.  This one is marked with a recently replaced trail post (2012).

Horse Meadow trail junction

That would be the Southern Horse Meadow trail junction. The unmarked junction we just passed approaching the Grizzly Peak trail junction on the Southbound TYT was the Northern junction, heading into the the top of Horse Meadow's canyon from the North to join the trail coming down from the edge of Summit Meadow.

A short hike South from the South Horse Meadow trail junction brings us Into the middle of Summit Meadow where we find the trail junction for the trail peeling off to our Southeast to Snow Lake.

Nice campsites around Snow Lake, and the face of the mountain below Bigelow Peak is full of Hummingbirds during the correct time of the year.

Summit Meadow trail junction to Snow Lake

We hike Left through both of these junctions to keep hiking South on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail.

Bond Pass is .86 of a mile climbing South out of the East side of Summit Meadow. Another .87 of a mile brings us down to the junction of our Tahoe to Yosemite Trail with the PCT in the top of Jack Main Canyon.

Brown Bear Pass to Jack Main Canyon

Halfway down Horse Meadow we see a weather station off on the East side of the Meadow. Here an unmaintained route leads over to Bigelow Lake. Bigelow Lake is located over a saddle in the mountain to the Southeast of Snow Lake.

This map shows the terrain, if not the route from Horse Meadow to Bigelow Lake:

Emigrant Wilderness overview

Using the above map we can chart out a nice alternative route to the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail route between Brown Bear and Bond Passes.

Or we can turn back towards Brown Bear Pass through North Cherry Creek, Horse Meadow, or Snow Lake if we hike South over Mosquito Pass. Each of these turns back is a bit further Southeast,  extending our loop routes back by a few miles.

This high altitude zone of Emigrant Wilderness is stunningly beautiful. Though we are hiking South into Yosemite on the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail route I will soon come back to put up guide pages for these trips around the Emigrant Wilderness.

Post up your questions, comments, experiences, and thoughts about this key area of the High Emigrant Wilderness. I'd like to hear your favorite routes.
