Rare Melting Events Becoming Common

Warm Weather Brings Major Melting to Greenland,
NASA Earth Observatory, August 2, 2019.

MAIN POINTS

"In late July 2019, a major melting event spread across the Greenland Ice Sheet. Billions of tons of meltwater streamed into the Atlantic Ocean throughout the month, making a direct and immediate contribution to sea level rise."

"The melting was provoked by a bubble of warm air that moved over Greenland after delivering unseasonably warm temperatures to Europe."

"...the last major melt event on July 11, 2012."

"The difference is that in 2019, the main melt event spanned two days, with a few hours of melt also occurring on July 31."

More News Reports

The Greenland ice sheet poured 197 billion tons of water into the North Atlantic in July alone,
WaPo, August 1, 2019.

MAIN POINTS

"...temperatures in Greenland have been running up to 15 to 30 degrees above average this week."

"...the ice sheet sent 197 billion tons of water pouring into the Atlantic Ocean during July."

"Studies have shown that ice melt periods like the one seen in 2012 typically occur about every 250 years, so the fact that another one is taking place only a few years later could be a sign of how climate change is upping the odds of such events."

Another News Report

Extreme ice melt in Greenland threatens coastal communities across the world, scientists warn,
CNBC, Aug 1, 2019.

MAIN POINTS

"...record event in 2012 where 97% of the ice sheet experienced melting. This week, over 60% of Greenland’s surface was melting, according to computer model simulations, with temperatures over 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit higher than normal."

"This week’s melt alone is estimated to permanently raise global sea levels by 0.1 millimeters."

“The fact that we are getting measurable sea level rise out of a single day of melt is shocking."

A Broader Perspective on this Month's Melting

It Can't be Called Unexpected...

New Study Shows Just How Frighteningly Fast Greenland Is Melting,
Gizmodo, December 5, 2018.

MAIN POINTS

"In July 2012, a spate of warm weather caused nearly the entire surface of the Greenland ice sheet to begin melting, an event with no precedent in the satellite record. A new study shows this massive melt-out wasn’t just an anomaly compared with the last 40 years, but the last 350. Unfortunately, the study also suggests 2012 could be a harbinger of our new normal."

"...since the 1990s, and particularly in the last decade, that melting has gone “off the charts” Das said. The central west Greenland cores show a 575 percent increase in surface melting in the last 20 years compared with pre-industrial times, while the ice cap core shows a 275 percent increase."

"...ice sheet-wide levels of meltwater runoff have jumped 50 percent in the past 20 years compared with pre-industrial times."

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

I NEED HELP!
If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
