Interdependence of Ecosystems Could be Our Ultimate House of Cards

Global warming increases the risk of an extinction domino effect,
European Commission Joint Research Centre, November 28, 2018.

An extinction domino effect is already underway.

MAIN POINTS

“...there are many elusive drivers of species loss that go beyond the direct effects of environmental change (and human activity) which we still struggle to understand.”

“...it is becoming clearer that co-extinctions (the disappearance of consumers following the depletion of their resources) could be a major culprit in the ongoing biodiversity crisis.”

“...predictions that fail to take into account this cascading effect might underestimate extinctions by up to 10 times.”

The Test
“...constructed 2000 "Virtual Earths", which they populated with thousands of plants and animals organized into a global system of inter-connected food-webs.”

“In the first scenario, they only accounted for the extinction of a species when the temperature became too high or too low for that species to tolerate.”

“In the second scenario, starting from the extinctions triggered by the mismatch between local temperature and species tolerance limits, they also simulated co-extinction cascades.”

10x More Extinction
“They found that failing to account for interdependencies between species led to underestimation of the magnitude of mass extinctions triggered by climate change by up to 10 times.”

The Bottom Line

This, "extinction event," we are right now in the middle of is the direct consequence of our long-followed policies, behaviors, and this result, widespread death, perfectly reflects and aligns the physical effects our behavior (predominately composed of greed and corruption in pursuit of wealth, power, and ultimately, gratification" ) have had on this planet, with their, "ultimate," consequences, being the widespread death and destruction we've spread around both the Natural, and the Human-Social Worlds.

It's gotta stop.

To get to that point, of controlling corruption, we've got to first save ourselves, to stop cheating each other, if we want to change our country's direction. Only after we stop cheating each other (politically and economically) can we hope to put a stop to the irresponsible growth policies that are kicking nature in the face and killing whole ecosystems, to save ourselves once again...

We've got to restore our ethics before we can truly address restoring our environment. That's why the, "Corporate Greens," are doomed to failure: Corporate Greens practice a form of, "environmentalism," that's dedicated to the service of justifying and continuing the Corporate Growth & Greed destroying our environment, rendering Corporate Greens less than worthless, as they protect the source of the process destroying us:

ENDLESS, IRRESPONSIBLE, GREED & GROWTH.

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

I NEED HELP!
If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
