The Thousand Year Fishing Downturn

Huge Systamatic Effects of Altering Atmosphere

Fishery yields will be dramatically reduced by 2300, study suggests,
American Association for the Advancement of Science, March 8, 2018.

"By 2300, climate change may cause fishery yields to decline by as much as 20% around the globe, and by as much as 60% in the North Atlantic..."

"Southern Ocean...mixing between the bottom and top oceanic layers, delivering such a substantial amount of nutrients to the surface that an abundance flows into other oceans."

Global Warming effects, "...will cause an increased portion of nutrients to sink into the deeper layer of the ocean and become trapped there (for example, the amount of phosphate being upwelled will be reduced by 41%..."

"...alterations to ocean mixing would ultimately drive a decline in fish populations near the surface..."

"They note that the long-term effects of these changes mean that fisheries will be reduced for a thousand years or more."

California Fishery Failure

These long-term reductions in Antarctic upwhellings triggered by the changing weather of our warming atmosphere are being paralled by the real-time effects of warming sea surface temperatures, and the vast depredations of industrial fishing fleets.

The atmospheric caused 20% reduction in the "fertility" of global fisheries discussed above may not even be an issue, as our industrial fishing and short-term effects of global warming will already have decimated fish populations long before 2300.

My real takeaway from this research is that the thousand year recovery time of Antarctic ocean mixing gives us a glimpse at the gravity of our contemporary destruction of our environment. The environment that we so easily destroy today over decades will not be so easily recovered over centuries.

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

I NEED HELP!
If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
