Circumplanetary Disk
Young planet designated PDS 70 c has a circumplanetary disk, a feature that is strongly theorized to be the birthplace of moons, credit to ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO) A. Isella; ESO.
This is a composite image of the young star system PDS 70. Comparing new ALMA data to earlier VLT observations, astronomers determined that the young planet designated PDS 70 c has a circumplanetary disk, a feature that is strongly theorized to be the birthplace of moons, credit to ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO) A. Solar System Formation, Planets & Moons

'Moon-Forming' Circumplanetary Disk Discovered in Distant Star System,
National Radio Astronomy Observatory, July 11. 2019.

Distant Moon Formation
"...made the first-ever observations of a circumplanetary disk, the planet-girding belt of dust and gas that astronomers strongly theorize controls the formation of planets and gives rise to an entire system of moons, like those found around Jupiter."

Distant Young Star and Infant Planets
"...discovered around one of the planets in PDS 70, a young star located approximately 370 light-years from Earth. Recently, astronomers confirmed the presence of two massive, Jupiter-like planets there."

First Dust Disk Observed around Infant Planet
"...we can conclusively see the telltale signs of a circumplanetary disk, which helps to support many of the current theories of planet formation."

Future Moons
"...we can clearly see that an otherwise enigmatic concentration of tiny dust particles is actually a planet-girding disk of dust, the first such feature ever conclusively observed.”

Construction Zone
"...provide compelling evidence that a dusty disk capable of forming multiple moons surrounds the outermost known planet in the system."

"...the first such feature ever conclusively observed."

Big Moons Forming?
"Astronomers estimate that this planet is approximately 1 to 10 times the mass of Jupiter. “If the planet is on the larger end of that estimate, it’s quite possible there might be planet-size moons in formation around it."

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
