 Man and Nature

December, 2018

Happenings in the relationship between Man and Nature affecting our hike down life's trail through both worlds. We study both the reality created by humans and the uncreated reality reflected in, and tended by Nature.

The vast majority of our reporting on Nature comes from the American Association of Scientists summarizations of each day's bounty of the peer-reviewed research published by academic institutions and journals around the world.

Our focus is on everything, every living thing and natural process that we will encounter hiking from Lake Tahoe to Mount Whitney, and out the Portal. The birds, the bees, the water, the trees, the granite in the ground under our feet, and the stars in the sky at night.

Our goal of tracking the status and trajectory of everything we encounter and engage as we hike through the Natural World then brings into play everything it takes to put and keep us out there, which covers a plethora of backpacker-related safety, health, fitness, gear, skills, observation, navigation, and, of course, weather and climate issues.

Finally, the most deciseive factor we track that predicts the current status and future trajectory of the health and well-being of Nature are the behaviors, science, culture, and arts of Mankind, who are both one of Nature's greatest and worse creations at the same time. We're going to try to make things better at the bottom-line.

We track the alingment of forces affecting the Nature of our hike through Life on this planet.

You will get the latest news from the forefronts of Climate, Bio, Astro, and the hard sciences affecting our engagement with Nature here, typically two days before hitting the corporate press, but a very long time after they've already deeply affected Man & Nature, if the grimness of our purposeful ecological collapse even comes across the pages of the corporate press at all.

You'll get the real deal here.

WEATHER

North Sierra-Northern California
Steady Moderate Precip

Sunday Afternoon & Evening

A big explosion of tropical moisture, a vast, yet transitory thunderhead blowing up off to the Southwest of Hawaii, has lofted a huge amount of tropical moisture, which has hooked into the bottom of the long Front stretching up to the Vast Low in Gulf Alaska.

You can observe this specific episode of Tropical Activity SW of Hawaii, with this global IR tool, if you observe Sunday evening. This tropical activity and the bottom of the low hooked up, firing-up the front more than expected. (Current N Pac map)

That low anchoring this long Front-line is right now at the very top of Gulf Alaska and moving almost directly North, out of the Northernmost Gulf, and its vast Front along the whole Western length of the US & Canada is right now crossing Westward onto land, and breaking up by Tuesday, if the forecasts are correct. But, not before it pushes some snow across Northern Nevada, Utah, and Northern New Mexico.

But, right now it’s carrying some warm tropical moisture from Southwest of Hawaii on a Front-line pointed almost directly from South to North, across the North Sierra, and soon the whole length of the Sierra, as it moves West...

It's not quite a fully-fledged Tropical Transport Meachanism, but it's moved some extra heat and precip into the current front...

(This blew rain across the Sierra Crest...)

END of FIRE SEASON

CALFIRE NEWS RELEASE

December 6

"AUBURN – Recent rains and cooler temperatures across the region have lowered
the threat of wildfires allowing CAL FIRE’s NEU Unit to transition out of fire
season effective Monday, December 10, 2018 at 8:00 am in Nevada, Yuba, Placer
and Sierra Counties."

Wow. The, "end," of fire season on December 10?

Maybe...

"Due to drought like conditions that persisted throughout 2018 in California, CAL
FIRE continues to maintain staffing to meet any future threat, as well as having the
ability to strategically move resources to areas that remain at a higher wildfire
threat level. CAL FIRE will also continue to monitor weather conditions closely
and will maintain the ability to increase staffing should the weather conditions
change or if there is a need to support wildfires and or any other emergencies in
other areas of the State."

GEOLOGY NOTE

The Geologically Active First Week of December

Besides the big Anchorage earthquake on November 30, we've just had a couple of moderate-big (4 & 3) bracketing both ends of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. This last week also brought a lot of activity along the coastal faults of California, as well as a swarm of quakes centered around & in the Long Valley Caldera on the Southeastern end of the Sierra.
