How Big is the Carbon Gun We're Triggering?

Very Large Indeed

Thawing permafrost produces more methane than expected,
GFZ GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam, Helmholtz Centre, March 19, 2018.

"...for the first time, measured and quantified in the laboratory the long-term production of methane in thawing permafrost."

"...demonstrated that water-saturated permafrost soils without oxygen can be twice as harmful to the climate as dry soils - which means the role of methane has been greatly underestimated."

"The permafrost soils of Northern Europe, Northern Asia and North America could produce up to 1 gigaton of methane and 37 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2100."

The bottom line is we are discovering that the things we thought were permenant, being the Northernmost permafrost and the Antarctic Ice Cap, are both changing, and both are going to melt.

Ice News, Big, Cold, Old, Things are Stirring: The Totten Glacier, East Antarctica

This trajectory could be part of a natural cycle, if it happened slowly, over thousands of years. It is not. Radical climate, weather, and ecosystem changes are happening over decades. These changes are being supercharged by the radical release of Carbon by very stupid humans who are very, very greedy and corrupt.

Stupid, greedy, and corrupt: That combination of forces never brings happy endings...

These simple facts make Hawking's dire predictions about the fate of our planet true:

Hawking: Soaring populations and increased energy demands will cause catastrophe

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
