Killing the Whole Planet

The Amazon is Crashing

Amazon deforestation is close to tipping point,
Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo, March 19, 2018.

"Deforestation of the Amazon is about to reach a threshold beyond which the region's tropical rainforest may undergo irreversible changes that transform the landscape into degraded savanna with sparse shrubby plant cover and low biodiversity."

"The Amazon system is close to a tipping point."

"...the tipping point would be reached if approximately 40% of the region were deforested."

"...climate change and indiscriminate use of fire...indicates a shift to non-forest ecosystems in the eastern, southern and central portions of the Amazon region at between 20% and 25% deforestation."

"Although we don't know the exact tipping point, we estimate that the Amazon is very close to this irreversible limit."

"According to the researchers, the megadroughts of 2005, 2010 and 2015-16 could well represent the first signs that this tipping point is about to be reached."

Still Vast Forest Loss
"If deforestation is brought to a full stop in the Amazon and Brazil fulfills its reforestation commitment, totally deforested areas will account for approximately 16%-17% of the Amazon by 2030."

Our growth and expansion is not decreasing, but picking up speed...

Climate Change Not the Only Threat to Vulnerable Species, Habitat Matters,
University of Massachusetts Amherst, December 23, 2019.

"...species across the globe now face concurrent pressures on many fronts. These include habitat degradation and fragmentation, overharvesting, overhunting, invasive species and pollution in addition to climate change..."

Amazon Regeneration Slower that Thought

Secondary forests are increasingly fragmented, and isolated from remaining primary forests, by Marizilda Cruppe/Rede Amazônia Sustentável.

Amazon Forest Regrowth Much Slower than Previously Thought,
Lancaster University, December 19, 2019.

Much Less "Mitigation"
"...the ability of secondary forests to soak up carbon from the atmosphere may have been over-estimated."

Over a Much Longer Time Frame
Way Too Late
"...it will take well over a century for the forests to fully recover, meaning their ability to help fight climate change may have been vastly overestimated."

Current Rapid Climate Change
"The region we studied in the Amazon has seen an increase in temperature of 0.1 C per decade, and tree growth was lower during periods of drought."

"With predictions of more drought in the future, we must be cautious about the ability of secondary forests to mitigate climate change."

"Our study shows that in heavily deforested areas, forest recovery needs additional support and investment to overcome the lack of seed sources and seed-dispersing animals. This is different from other areas we have studied where historic deforestation is much lower and secondary forests recover much faster without any human intervention."

Thus, Climate Pledges Not Effective
"Many nations have made large reforestation pledges in recent years..."

Grasslands Too...

A century later, plant biodiversity struggles in wake of agricultural abandonment,
University of Minnesota, November 18, 2019.

"...91 years after abandonment, the fields had 73% of the plant diversity and 53% of the plant productivity. "

"...is likely happening in ecosystems around the world where land has been cleared for agriculture, logging or other human activities."

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
