Shifted Global Temps into New Gear

Stored heat released from ocean largely responsible for recent streak of record hot years,
AGU Blogs, January 24, 2018.

"Global temperatures spiked during the record warm years of 2014 to 2016 largely because El Niño released an unusually large amount of heat generated by greenhouse gas emissions and stored in the Pacific Ocean, a new study finds."

“As a climate scientist, it was just remarkable to think that the atmosphere of the planet could warm that much that fast.”

“Our research shows global warming is accelerating.”

"...Earth’s surface warming slowed down from 1998 to 2013. ...the Pacific Ocean had been storing excess heat from the atmosphere during these years and that the 2015-2016 El Niño had released that stored heat."

Result

The "...0.43 degree-Fahrenheit) global temperature increase from 2014-2016 was unprecedented in the 20th and 21st centuries."

The Future

"...if greenhouse gas emissions rise unabated throughout the 21st century, the projections suggest large temperature surges would occur three to nine times by 2100. Under this scenario, such events would likely be warmer and longer than the 2014-2016 spike and have more severe impacts."

Later EL Nino News

The El Nino stretching across the drought years of 2014-16 did little to aleviate our drought, as the vast majority of its tropical moisture was transported around us by the persistent High off the West Coast of the US. It was a major "dud," during the biggest El Nino in recorded history. The drought was not broken until the torrential downpours of the Winter of 2017, which came with the beginnings of a weak La Nina!

Recently the big El Nino brought extreme drought and the burgeoning La Nina broke the drought with record precip.

Nonetheless, vast amounts of heat and moisture were transferred into the atmosphere during the El Nino of 2014-16, spawning chaotic effects around the Northern Hemisphere while rapidly reinforcing the forces of global warming and climate change.

The moderating force of the world's oceans acting as a heat sink against global warming has now reached and crossed its tipping point into a heat radiator and redistributor. This means the effects of our radical changes to the atmosphere will be more directly felt, and not be as moderated by heat absorbtion into the oceans. No, the oceans have begun to return the heat they've stored for us.

In any case, our planet's mechanisms of heat absorbtion and distrubtion are unsettled, and becoming more unbalanced in comparison with traditional cycles.

Consequences

"...2015 and 2016 were clearly warmer than any other year in the record."

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

I NEED HELP!
If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
