"...observations of a binary system called V404 Cygni - consisting of a star and a black hole closely orbiting each other, with the black hole feeding off matter from the star that falls through the disc..."

"They are nature's very own Death Star beams - ultra-powerful jets of energy that shoot out from the vicinity of black holes like deadly rays from the Star Wars super-weapon."

"Extreme gravity within the disc twists and stretches magnetic fields, squeezing hot, magnetised disc material called plasma until it erupts in the form of oppositely directed magnetic pillars along the black hole's rotational axis."

"Plasma travels along these focused jets and gains tremendous speed, shooting across vast stretches of space."

"...jet plasma must have been strongly accelerated to speeds approaching that of light."

"...energetic enough to tear apart an Earth-like planet if properly focused."

Added to Our List of Existential Threats?

Conventional Star Black hole binary system with black hole emitting planet-frying capable plasma beam. A beam capable of frying a planet at some extended distances.

Should we add "Black Hole Death Ray" to the list of "Planet Killer" extisential threats that any advanced race would "hedge" against? By "hedge," I mean take precautions, if at all possible. There may be no possible "precautions" to offset the unlikely danger of a "Black Hole Death Ray."

Now that we know that about every respectable galaxy has a super-massive black hole at its center, and that active ones can have significant effects on their surrounding galaxy, should we be worried? The super-massive black hole at the center of ours is inactive, but I would expect that's just one stage of its life, and it will go, "active," at some point in time.

Naw. This is more knowledge than threat, but a threat nonetheless, if minor. The unveiled powers of Nature sure do make our nuclear weapons look like a puny expression of its true power as creator and eradicator of life itself.

To me the question of "does the universe expand forever or eventually contract," and applying the mechanism of "entropy" to understanding our universe seemed to me to be asking the wrong question and using the wrong tools and approach to the question.

Ultimately, I've thought that we all & everything eventually all ends up in the center of a black hole, before this thing bangs off again... What if, if what the universe is really doing, is eating itself?

Life eats itself to survive, and I expect and suspect that our Universe is doing exactly the same thing, on its own unique scale, by its own unique means.

...if true, that means "contraction and expansion" and entropy itself are no more than artifacts of our perspective, of our lack of understanding of how and what gravity is really doing. We are the product of and a very small part of the "perpetual motion machine," our universe, which has been doing this gravity, matter, time, space, and energy "dance" that makes itself the mother of forever & infinity itself.

Support Tahoe to Whitney

The Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide and Magazine are walked, written, funded, and supported by my efforts, with the help of kindred spirits and my sister.

We offer valuable Trail Guide, Skills, Weather, News and Analysis.

My goal is to get you out to see your natural and social potential. Help me keep this unique resource accessible and expanding towards its potential. We've a lot of miles to cover ahead...

If you feel these efforts are valuable, I'm cordially inviting you to support them, here:

I am currently working towards publishing the completed guide between Tahoe & Yosemite as an e-book, while converting this "blog" to a fine magazine format. You will like the results! Help Tahoe to Whitney reach its potential!
