Backpacking Boots

Selecting the proper backpacking footwear for your trip and for your feet is vitally important to a successful backpacking trip.

First Things First

First and foremost, don't hit the trail with new boots. After selecting the proper boots for your feet and your trip make sure that you have sufficient time to break them in. I say this because this is the leading cause of foot problems on the trail.

Closely following new boots is improper footwear as the second cause of foot problems on the trail.

Do it Right

I've produced the Backpacking Boot Guide and the Boot Selection Video on this page to help you figure out the confusing range of boot styles, which boot style is right for you, and how to test the boot for proper structural support and stability.

I suggest breaking in your boots as part of your physical preparation for your upcoming backpacking trip. You are going to have to take the time before you hit the trail to properly prep yourself or you are going to suffer.

Your Call

This page also sports the forum for comments, questions, and experiences you've had with various styles and brands of boots.

Comments-Questions-Experiences?

This forum is set up to provide a range of basic information about backpacking boot types, construction, and selection.

This is setup for your input about backcountry footwear for the Tahoe to Whitney Trail Guide, to be incorporated in the various sections. Our goal is to get you the best information so you can get the best boot for you and your application. Let's start at the beginning.

Check out the Trail Guide's page about  Boot Selection.

Your input about how to get the right boot (and left!) is vital for a well-rounded view of the range of approaches to selecting and using backcountry footwear, though I still think you barefoot people are cra-cra.

If you'd like to start a forum or post up an article in the Gear Forum, Register as a member of Tahoe to Whitney. You can post up comments without registering. All are welcome.
