Merging Neutron Stars Data Defines Neutron Size Limit

How massive can neutron stars be?

The dual observations of gravity distorion followed by conventional energy from the pair of colliding neutron stars, initally observed as a gravity wave by LIGO, provided concise observational information for events long theorized about, and "calculated" over. See the LIGO articles below for more about associated "theoretical events," exploding in the world of astrophysics in the wake of these observations.

The LIGO observations involved a Kilonova creation-event of vast amounts of gold, silver, other heavy metals, gamma rays, and a gravity hole, among a vast amount of nasty radiactive debris and light. Unlike LIGO's first "unobserved observation," because nothing visible escapes from two black holes colliding, this second event was visible. Colliding neutron stars make such a huge explosion that producing a black hole is only one of their many by-products.

Observing this event produced a vast amount of information.

The consequences of these observations and information are affecting our views of all space, time, and matter. In this new research above we find some new limits on the state of matter in neutron stars derived from information collected from the LIGO observations, specifically, that, "With an accuracy of a few percent, the maximum mass of non-rotating neutron stars cannot exceed 2.16 solar masses."

Nobody knew that before the LIGO observations.

In other words, up to now we've relied on descriptions from our math and theory to explain what matter really is, and how it really behaves at the highest energy levels. With LIGO we've found a "reality-check" for our math and theory that's testing and adjusting theories, pushing our understanding closer to totality. The LIGO kilonova's a big "reality-check," sufficient to test and adjust a whole lot of of math and theories about how the nature of reality really operates.

This also might shed some light on why kids like to blow things up...

The consequences and implications of the LIGO kilonova observations about the nature of reality have now been captured by, and are rippling through the minds of mankind, and will be for quite some time. Another significant step on our technical path to fully understanding our physical reality.

Our progress on the path to full technical understanding of our physical reality requires sufficient ethical progress to keep us from destroying ourselves, each other, and our environment with our technological knowledge. I'd prefer, and it'd be a lot safer for us and everything around us, if we evolved our ethical skills prior to our developing technological power, but this type of problem is ultimately self-canceling, through our own species' subjective success, or our failure.
