 Man and Nature

August, 2018

Happenings in the relationship between Man and Nature affecting our hike down life's trail through both worlds. We study both the reality created by humans and the uncreated reality reflected in, and tended by Nature.

The vast majority of our reporting on Nature comes from the American Association of Scientists summarizations of each day's bounty of the peer-reviewed research published by academic institutions and journals around the world.

Our focus is on everything, every living thing and natural process that we will encounter hiking from Lake Tahoe to Mount Whitney, and out the Portal. The birds, the bees, the water, the trees, the granite in the ground under our feet, and the stars in the sky at night.

Our goal of tracking the status and trajectory of everything we encounter and engage as we hike through the Natural World then brings into play everything it takes to put and keep us out there, which covers a plethora of backpacker-related safety, health, fitness, gear, skills, observation, navigation, and, of course, weather and climate issues.

Finally, the most deciseive factor we track that predicts the current status and future trajectory of the health and well-being of Nature are the behaviors, science, culture, and arts of Mankind, who are both one of Nature's greatest and worse creations at the same time. We're going to try to make things better at the bottom-line.

We track the alingment of forces affecting the Nature of our hike through Life on this planet.

You will get the latest news from the forefronts of Climate, Bio, Astro, and the hard sciences affecting our engagement with Nature here, typically two days before hitting the corporate press, but a very long time after they've already deeply affected Man & Nature, if the grimness of our purposeful ecological collapse even comes across the pages of the corporate press at all.

You'll get the real deal here.

North Yosemite Backcountry
Twin Lakes (?) to Bensen Lake Loop?

Between July 25 and August 5

All hikers in the North Yosemite Backcountry (along, or who crossed the route of the Bensen Lake Loop) between July 25 and August 5 are asked to contact the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch at 888/653-0009 or online, if you've seen Scott or not.

The official description of Scott's route looks like it is the route of the classic, "Twin Lakes-Bensen Lake Loop," around some of the most challenging terrain of the North Yosemite Backcountry, entered and exited via Twin Lakes in the Hoover Wilderness.

This route includes the segment of the PCT-TYT from Kerrick Canyon to Matterhorn Canyon, for all of you long distance backpackers hiking from Tuolumne Meadows to Sonora Pass.

The point of this announcement is that ascertaining where he was not seen during these dates is almost as important as where he was seen, so give the Park Service a call if you hiked through on these dates.

SEKI INCIDENTS

July 28— Rangers contacted two visitors at Roads End who had left food and backpacks out and unattended on the Kanawyer Loop Trail near Bubbs Creek junction. Witnesses reported a bear eating food out of the visitor’s backpack while the visitors were away from the packs. The visitors were cited for abandoned property.

July 23— Rangers assisted the Madera County Sheriff’s Office in their search for a 70-year-old German man hiking the PCT. The investigation led them to believe the man was well north of Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon rangers are no longer involved in the search, but the case is still open with Madera County at the time of this writing.

The Germ was Spotted by hiker on July 17 descending to Bensen Lake on PCT North of Tuolumne Meadows.
