Hiking South on the combined PCT-TYT down Cold Canyon to Glen Aulin on August 3 encounted a hiker who I identified as trail crew as he approached.

Dan Schweitzer was indeed trail crew, and he was leading the pack hiking up the steep climb from Glen Aulin to the meadows in upper Cold Canyon. Not only was he moving fast and nimbly while climbing, he was only lightly strained. Classic trail crew.

Trail Crew on Trail Guide

I soon encountered Kirk, then Jermaine and Rob. A short while later we met Abel, Jason, Chris, and Duffy, then the trail crew leader NIck Ross with his Right-hand man, John Ray.

Their first destination was the campsite at the Matterhorn Canyon ford, then the next day they would hike to Smedberg Lake to meet a pack train of mules with their camp equipment.

These are the folks that make the Pacific Crest and Tahoe to Yosemite Trails possible and passable. Well, passable in any reasonable time-frame. High Sierra backpacking is a completely different beast without trails!

Thanks for you work, Trail Crew!

If any of the folks on this crew want to post up some pictures of your camp and crew in this post, post up a comment of  email me!
