Very Cold Water and the Magic Timer

 EXTREME DANGER WARNING

Amazing times, having two classic Hot and Cold Dangers of the Sierra Nevada stacked, "Back to Back." More than these two dangers, actually.

The dueling dangers of cold water fords during a super-hot heat wave are further complimented by the extreme difficulty of travelling through deep, wet, soft Spring snow. This combination of hot and cold risks brings other dangers into play.

We are seeing a record-level Heat Wave rapidly revealing a vast forest of a hundred-million dead trees. This vast dead forest's rapid emergence from under this massive snowpack could quickly be pushed into "catastrophic" thaw conditions, where a rapid heat wave thaw magnifies the forest instability to bring down whole mountainsides of forests and rock as massive avalanches swept down into raging High Sierra Fording conditions.

The last time this happened was '94. I saw the aftermath in Summit City Creek's devastated canyon, then again further downriver along the North Fork of the Mokelumne. The devastation was massive.

To top it all off currently, a tropical storm out of the Gulf of Mexico could pull some powerful tropical electrical storms and heavy downpours across the Sierra, which compliments the push of super-heat-wave driven cells of moist air out of the Valley that compile into monumental thunderheads crossing the Sierra Crest.

Electric storms are a real threat, so keep your eyes on the skies, too!

Lightening Probabilities

All aspects of High Sierra environmental conditions have gotten drastic. The potential for catastrophic thaws bringing crazy avalanche "daming," and catastrophic thaw surges down High Sierra watersheds are very high right now and are going to be so for the next few days as these heat wave and tropical storm threats combining with our still massive snow pack and already surging Sierra Rivers to pose some extreme threat scenarios.

Great caution in all aspects of High Sierra travel must be exercised.

MOUNTAIN SAFETY HAZARD

THE THREAT OF ACCESS

With Sonora Pass opening on the 13th, the Bishop Creek Shuttle on the 17th, and Tioga Road getting ready for its public opening, we are looking at open access to the High Sierra Flanks and Crestline in very difficult and dangerous snow travel and river fording conditions. The rivers dividing Sierra Crestline Peaks are running at powerfully strong flows. The creeks are dangerous, the rivers are deadly.

Our increasing threat levels are more a function of rising access of large numbers of folks able to put themselves into a wide range of very, very dangerous conditions. The snow, the rivers, and the heat are just the tip of the sword. The trails, bridges, and even the roads are all emerging in seriously damaged conditions out from under the retreating snow. Then there are the trees...

Hundreds of millions of dead trees mauled by the snow pack are emerging...

Matt Bloom at Kennedy Meadows reported the snow is melting incredibly quickly. He stated that he would not be surprised if it retreated to the Crestline and highest flanks by mid-July.

Kim at Lake Alpine Lodge reported heavy snow, along with heavy damage to Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass that's expected to significantly delay opening.

From Kim,
Lake Alpine's Manager:

Hey Alex!!!
Great to hear from you! We're still dealing with snow but we are
opening this Friday June 16, 7 days a week,we have a new chef (new menu to come), lake is almost completely thawed out, our docks and boats are not in the water yet no campgrounds yet (too much snow). Hopefully 2 campgrounds open by 4th of July weekend, West Shore and Silver Tip. We've had some damages to fix but we're getting ready for a great summer.
I looked at your link and it looks good but there's no Pam as a manager. Hwy 4 is in bad shape on the east side so the highway is only open passed us to the east end of the lake, no Tahoe access.
I've heard from some backpackers I just hope everyone is careful hiking with all this snow. Come see us this summer, meet our new chef and have a great meal!! Would love to see you!!

KEY NEWS
SONORA PASS OPEN

ACCESS DANGER

Access Opening
Sonora Pass opening indicates that full access to the still deeply snow-covered Sierra Crest is beginning in earnest. Highway 108 across Sonora Pass will soon be complimented, or should I say, "bookended," by Highway 120 across Tuolumne Meadows to our South, and Ebbetts Pass to our North, as snowplows are currently slowly approaching both.

Wild Conditions
Yet the Sierra Crest is still holding ten feet of snow across even the lowest crest line passes.

We have already passed May Day and are approaching the Fourth of July with a substantial snow pack still sitting on the Sierra Crest and heavy runoff flows still running through Sierra Rivers.

More
These conditions are not going to be what many Summertime Backpackers expect. These are amazing conditions, but require more of everything. More clothes, more gear, more work, more food, more fitness, more navigation skills, and most especially, more common-sense and good decision-making skills.

Time to exercise the skill sets?

IDIOT ALERT

Climbers rescued off 14,265 ft Quandary Peak in Summit County, Colorado recall feeling near brink of death,
Sierra Sun, June 1, 2017.

Rule Number One

Don't put yourself into situations that your skills, experience, strength and fitness cannot get you out of. Evolving good decision-making requires excellent observation and analysis skills evolved with experience. Good decisions do not involve, "leaps of faith," where somehow you will magically become endowed with the skills and strength necessary to reach your objective. That is a plan for failure, not success.

But most importantly, good safety practices require restraint, the ability to say, "no," that is too much, when our objectives exceed our capabilities, or the risk/reward ratio becomes too steep.

This is especially true this year's June, now that Summertime Sports-Folk are coming out to find trecherous conditions in snow covered mountains after seven years of clear, warm June weather. Many backpackers have an expectation of clear trails and clear conditions during June that do not exist this year, and were freak events when they did.
These climber's story is just one of the earlier in what is going to be a sad series of incidents of improperly prepped Summertime hikers and climbers moving into "unexpected" trecherous Spring snow conditions.

That merits an, "Idiot Alert," in addition to our Current Standing Backpacker Alert:
Don't be and Idiot! Properly assess the risks and the rewards!

Let me be the first to tell you: The Sierra Crest is packed with wet, soft, energy-sucking snow. This sopping snow pack is feeding furious flows across all the major and minor fords. I say go check it out, but don't under-gear for wetness in the snow, bouts of bad weather, and be ready to turn around at a dangerous ford or otherwise modify your hiking plan in respect of conditions on the ground.

High Sierra Backpacker's Calendar: June 2017

All HIgh Sierra Nevada Snow reporting stations and watershed snow pillows

The Weather Page Snow Reports

Many trails carved across mountain flanks are walls of hard, slick snow during morning, and offer no support with afternoon softening.

These are the things you should know before you go, and make specific inquires to the Wilderness Ranger of the Ranger District you enter, before entering.

This is exactly the scenario I wrote about in, "The Setting and the Trap."

Age of Cheaters

Illegal activities threaten natural World Heritage -- IUCN,
INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR CONSERVATION OF NATURE, June 30. 2017.

These are the Cheaters, such as Barry Bonds and Lance Armstrongs, & etc, all of whom put themselves above our Rule of Law to advance their own personal wealth and interests...

The ubiquity of cheating here in the USA and around the whole world indicates that...

We Need a New Environmentalism:...

One that allows NO alliances of CHEATERS linking the wealth of the Top to the poverty of the Bottom into an unbeatable alliance fueling the Corporate Growth Machine of Death...

No, that dirty alliance must be broken, not just for Nature's sake, but to preserve our honor as Americans.

We must dissassemble these engines of self-perpetuating poverty to reverse our environmental destruction. We must refuse the demographic growth that is painting us, and our whole Natural World into such a desperate corner.

We've got to end the Age of Cheaters to save what's left of our Natural World. In the long term our efforts are going to be understood as our last attempts to save the place where the content of our characters is created, the real home of our own souls, the place they live when we are not using them.

We are going to learn the hard lesson, that the, "less meat there is on the bone," in Nature quickly translates into a situation of much, "less meat on the bone," for humans. It's just like your mom used to tell you, "You're just cheating yourself," in the long run. These cheaters are cheating all of us in the long and short runs.

Stop the Natural Meltdown?

First, We Have to STOP THE GROWTH

To help the Delta, we need to fix the Sierra,
Sac Bee, June 21, 2017.

To "fix" the Sierra and "help" the Delta we have to address the weather change problem at its true source. The source of our environmnetal destruction lays in the mechanism of corruption controlling policy and politics itself, which has driven forth policies of massive irresponsible growth.
We must aim directly for Stopping the Corporate Growth Machine of Death by breaking the corrupt relationship between corporate wealth and political power. We must establish a balance with Nature after reestablishing our democracy between each other.

That's how we can "fix" the Sierra and "help" the Delta, by first ending the corruptions that make these damages possible . The only way we can do that is by driving the money-changers, the bribers and bribed out of our political temples. We can only fix Nature by first fixing ourselves.

Why Kids So Fat & Stupid?

19-year-olds as sedentary as 60-year-olds, study suggests,
JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, June 15, 2017.

Why
Because many of today's kids are being rasied as, "consumers." Being a "consumer" requires having no active engagement with the physical, spiritual, or intellectual aspects of our surrounding social reality, let alone any contact whatsoever with "uncreated" natural reality.

Being a "consumer" only requires children to, "absorb" an infinite stream of media, food, clothes, and wothless consumer products. It simply involves training yourself to cheap, easy, and quick self-gratifications.

Ultimately, these kids come to physically and "spiritually" reflect the debased environment and "values-free morality" we created them within. The nasty urban environment we create and raise fat, stupid, disengaged, "consumers" within directly reflects our society's deep and growing lack of common sense, basic values, or any enduring wisdom whatsoever. It represents greed.

Sense, values, and wisdom obstruct our endless pursuit of self-gratifications, so they are ignored. In the meantime, our greedy desires seep into, and poison our children's minds and bodies.

I'd fix these kids right up with a couple of weeks in Ma Nature's own, "School of Pack." My favorite "classroom" runs along the Sierra Crest from Tahoe to Whitney.

The rigorous nature of this classroom eases the "adjustment" to understanding that all pain and pleasure, whatever their sources, only have the meaning and validity you yourself give them. Pain and Pleasure are nothing more than the emotional-physical expressions reflecting your individual profile of meaning and vaildity, or your lack of meaning and vaildity, as we engage the worlds of Man and Nature.

Fat, stupid, kids are our society's main emotional-physical "product," their obesity and materialism a product of, and reflecting the true "meaning and vaildity" driving consumerism in the US today. These kids are perfect examples of why you should never allow society to openly dedicate itself to greed and self-gratification:

You kids will become fat, stupid idiots exercise alone cannot fix.

Cover Up

Oroville Dam Incident Explained: What Happened, Why and What’s Next,
Water Deeply, June 14, 2017.

FAIL

This article fails miserably to account for "what happened, why, or what's next."

That's because the article above is a cover-up, completely ignoring the Political Corruption behind, that's driving all the technical corruptions it cites as "causes" of the spillway failures.

This article completely ignores the clouds of corruption and the initial construction scandals enveloping the Original"-(corporate)-Gangster "Daddy" Brown, while also completely ignoring the political "mojo" that silenced the 2005 "Smoking Gun" report.

Finally, the above article ignores the most important fact: Oroville and the rest of our corrupted, flawed infrastructure was not built nor is regulated for the benefit of the citizens of California by our corrupted political parties, but funded by our citizens to be the most fundamental tool with which to drive the irresponsible growth that has quite successfully asset-stripped them, and done great damage to our staNew study suggests Jupiterte’s human and natural resources, all for the benefit of their corporate sponsors.

Inherent Wisdom in Action

Fractal planting patterns yeild optimal harvests, without central control,
SANTA FE INSTITUTE, June 9, 2017.

Consciousness is an emergent phenomenon inherent in the design of complex biological systems. (Not electrical systems, for all you AI fans. Sorry.)
This inherent, "consciousness," is resident, an emergent phenomena within large biological structures can be "felt," and "hosted," by "operators" capable of "metaphysical abstraction," generally after extended, "raw" engagement with Nature.

I have a link for a discussion about this, which I am looking for...

Following the same line of logic, Natural, inherent, "wisdom," would be what we could call the observational decisions guiding each of the  farmers in the article above to individually make planting decisions each reflecting maximization of the mutual inherent consciousness, consisting of the biological mass and fertility of their crop, which is itself expressing, "preferences," by growing better in certain conditions.

The fractals represent each of their interlocked decisions being an accurate reflection of the evolving mutual requirements of maintaining and expanding crop fertility. The fractals represent the physical expression of the inherent logic of the intertwined force of life of the rice and its farmers.

Modern humans today use our distorted version of, "wisdom," to build "fractals" that strip and consume the fertility of biological systems, rather than enhance them. I hate it when the "fractal" pees on the couch.

I personally use a “grid” pattern-recognition system for visual and auditory identification tracking of distant objects, which is how I personally identify these sensory “relationships” between “operators” (backpackers, animals, frogs) and our environment.

Our sensory network is not just physically sophisticated, in its ability to detect information. Our senses are also, “enhanced,” by being directly tied to neural networks, our biological, “computers,” which deliver a huge amount of secondary information along with the basic input of, “something’s there.”

Our neural network assignes speed, direction, size, and now we can see from the above research, “quality” information as well.

Burned Again

Oroville Dam update: Fracture likely caused by ‘multiple factors,’
Sac Bee, June 1, 2017.

There lays beneth the Oroville Dam Debacle a decision-making process tainted by political bribery from inception, through design, into construction, and continuing for decades through its "on the cheap" maintenance.

Oroville Dam's failure was inevitable, just a matter of time and fate, before the structural weaknesses incorporated into every aspect of Oroville by this taint of political corruption and bribery sabotaging every step of construction, and aspect of upkeep would finally come together to come apart.

Logic dictates that dams come apart during the epic storms of a record Winter, the times when we need their reliability the most, long after the politicians, developers, and corporate agriculture have pocketed the vast profits garnered by bribing politicians and stripping Nature.

Feeding the Beast
It works for our "leaders." We'll pay for their corruption with our lives and property, then with our money to fix it, and finally pay to build them another to feed their Twin Tunnels they want us to build so they can continue their scam of irresponsible growth.

LA and its corporate masters have plans, no, they are already spreading LA's vast megacity footprint East across the deserts of the Inland Empire, looking to build all the way to Arizona.

A Very Hungry Beast
The Corporate Growth Machine of Death needs a hell of a lot of water to support the millions and millions of consumers they plan on (are currently) importing into the Southwestern deserts of the USA to fulfill their greedy dreams. Anyone notice we are in a very serious long-term drying trend? Anyone at all?

And our corporate masters plan on achieving their massive development dreams by cheating and draining the welfare of our citizens and everything they can rip out of Nature's hide, at every stage of this, their corrupt, "game," of endless growth.

Right now they own Jerry, the Queen on the chessboard of California Politics, who is striving to bend all of Our Wonderland to the Will of the Beast...

Don't worry, the Democrat's Corporate Growth Machine of Death is "Green!"

As green as the money of Jerry and the Dem's corporate bribers.

In that case, the Dems are very, very, "Green!"

We did not need experts...

Experts: Lack of warning at California dam raises alarms,
AP, June 1, 2017.

These experts not raising the alarm over politically corrupted “Dam Comissions,” corrupt deferrals of proper building and maintenance standards, for decades,  raises serious alarms about these experts themselves.

How come these experts have concerns after our country's dams, not to metion our roads, bridges, water and electrical systems have been completely looted? I suspect they got part of the take, of the profits from the death and destruction wrought by, "extended maintenance cycles."

The profits from "Grandma Millie," from screwing you and me.

We’ve got to end political bribery to restore any trust.

As we can see from the article above, our, "Dam Experts," yell, "run," after the dam has already broken... and that's not worth much money or respect.

FIX IT
For our Health, Wealth, General Welfare, and Justice

We can save our environment and our country once we come to the simple agreement that greed, corruption, and cheating are unacceptable, and follow this deep insight up by insisting that taking and making bribes, and all forms of cheating our country become a point of punishment rather than of reward.

 Sounds simple?

Not so much. The Forces of Organized Greed are Very Powerful in our country today.
