HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happenings in the relationship between Man and Nature affecting our hike down life's trail through both worlds. We study both the reality created by humans and the uncreated reality reflected in, and tended by Nature.

The vast majority of our reporting on Nature comes from the American Association of Scientists summarizations of each day's bounty of the peer-reviewed research published by academic institutions and journals all around our whole world.

My focus is on everything, every living thing and natural process that we will encounter hiking from Lake Tahoe to Mount Whitney, and out the Portal. The birds, the bees, the water, the trees, and the stars at night. Among a plethora of backpacker-related safety, weather, science, culture, and news topics.

You will get the latest news from the forefronts of Climate, Bio, Astro, and the hard sciences here, typically two days before it hits the corporate press, but a very long time after they've already deeply affected Man & Nature, if the grimness of our purposeful ecological collapse even comes across the pages of the corporate press at all.

You get the real deal here.

Forest Service proposes Jobs Peak transmitter,

Google Map
Relationship of Freel & Jobs Peaks to our through trails

The repeater is to achieve better signal in the canyons and valleys of the East Flank of the Sierra, looking like its target" are the remote portions of the Toiyabe-administered Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, which TW covers well with maps , miles, and guide information.

Carson Iceberg Wilderness Backpacking Map

But Tahoe to Whitney dosen't cover Freel or Jobs Peaks, or the Eastern shore of Lake Tahoe for that matter, nor the extent of the Carson Range wrapping around above Tahoe's Eastern Shore. Tahoe to Whitney mostly focuses on the main line of the Sierra Crest, but I made up this google map showing the relationship of Freel & Jobs Peaks to our through trails, and local roads.

This is because we can't help watching Freel and Jobs Peaks from every unobstructed Eastward View we get since starting our hike South from Meeks Bay, as these two mountains are the two peaks dominating the whole length of the Carson Range Crestline wrapping around the Eastern Shore of the Tahoe Basin.

The differences between the two ranges are pretty profound. The Carson Range is predominantly volcanic, but the volcanic terrain reveals many islands of granite. The Sierra Range is predominantly granitic, but many parts of it are bound, and even surrounded by, the eroding remains of massive, ancient burnt red volcanic flows.

You'll see that Tahoe to Whitney maps well-cover the Western Shore of Tahoe from the Meeks Bay Trailhead of the Tahoe to Yosemite Trail South to where we exit the Tahoe Basin for Carson Pass, covering Desolation Wilderness and Meiss Country Roadless Area,

Tahoe Basin Backpacking Maps,

While I pretty much ignore the Carson Range on the trail guide. our best map for entering the Carson Range & approaching Freel & Jobs covers the route Northeast through Big Meadow Trailhead on the South end of the Tahoe Basin.

SOCAL FIRES

DROUGHT PATTERN
Although the wave of weak storms across the Sierra on November 17 put the 2017 High Sierra Fire Season to bed, Southern California has remained warm and dry. The vast blocking ridge along and off the West Coast of the US has fully reestablished itself, and has been knocking Arctic Storms around to our North, reducing Sierra snow pack, and starving SoCal of moisture, under warm conditions.

BRAVE NEW WORLD
Our drought never ended, but the increasing heat has been establishing a new Winter pattern bringing warm tropical moisture North, rather than cold Arctic storms South.

THE RIDGE
The same mechanism of changing heat distribution and transfer on our planet is what's established the blocking ridge typical of our drought years, the one that's sitting there off the West Coast of the USA right now, which is also the mechanism that generates the Santa Ana Winds, which are currently supercharging the fire potential of a very dry, warm SoCal.

NEW WORLD EMERGING
Observe carefully. Take notes! We are watching each piece of whole new sets of regional weather patterns emerging, like new-born babies, as they are being first-forged by the completely new characters of our "new" seasons and seasonal transitions.

The heat distribution system has changed out from under our traditonal range of seasonal patterns, and they are gone. We are now watching the New World's Weather emerging.

Enjoy the show, it's going to be epic, and it's just getting started.
