15-year UC study finds alcohol more effective than exercise for long life,
SFCrate, February 21, 2018.

A counter-intutive set of results!

"...seniors who drank one or two glasses of wine or beer each day were 18 percent less likely to die prematurely. Comparatively, those who exercised between 15 to 45 minutes a day were similarly less predisposed to die prematurely, but only 11 percent less less likely."

"... overall health in old age could also be boosted by one's genetic makeup, or by being slightly overweight (but not obese)."

"Those who spent two hours a day on a hobby were 21 percent less likely to die prematurely."


Hummm...I've got to attribute these counter-intutive results up to the, "Happiness Index."

Sometimes I get this strange feeling that this life is actually perfect, except for how we get in our own way. The more we stress out and fuss around, the more we screw each other, the more we shorten our own lives. The more we relax, and actually do what we ourselves believe is "right," the more we do what we ourselves want to do, within wise ethical restraints, the longer we live.

This study failed to address the (imaginary?) group that both exercised every day and, "had a couple," of drinks every night: those suckers could probably live forever!

Some exercise, good eating, a bit of backpacking and hiking, and a couple of drinks every night sounds like a pretty damn good long-term "plan" to me...

Properly balanced "virtue and vice" leads to a long life.
