This Alert will be in effect as long as this massive snowpack sits upon the Crest. That is uncertain, but will likely last through at least the middle of July, depending on weather. Good chance for this snowpack to see next season's Winter.

BACKPACKER ALERT: March 22 2017, PCT High Sierra Spring Status and Disposition factors

THIS YEAR
2017

March 22

Hey Hikers.

We face the Spring Thaw. Below I discuss where we are and what I see as the most important factors controlling how Spring will play out into Summer. I link to the resources necessary to track these factors.

The questions we address here are first, fording conditions and safety, then trails, specifically, "when will the trails open for PCT hikers and hikers geared for Summer travel?"

BACKPACKER ALERT: February 20, 2017

 Hey Hikers,

Alex here, from Tahoe to Whitney.

Sorry about the delay contacting you. I have had a series of distracting personal events while Nature has cut loose. Nonetheless, I have been tracking the wild weather across the Backpacker News Pages on the Forum and the Backpacker's Calendar on the Trail Guide. I hope you've checked them out and found them useful and informative.

Bear News and Research

The repository of Bear news and stories we come across.

I've written about my experiences with High Sierra Black Bear Behavior in the Trail and Camp Skills section of the Trail Guide. Remember, bears act differently in different locations, and can be quite unpredictable in most situations.

SPIDERS & Other Mountain INSECT NEWS

We've got worlds of wonder in the High Sierra looking in any direction. The ground and sky are full of vibrant insect communities. Some, like the mosquitoes, are winged devils. Others are winged delights. On the ground we find spiders trying to catch and eat them all.

This forum started out as the Spider Forum, but has been expanded to include the various insects we encounter that are not Bees, Butterflies, and Mosquitoes, which have their own dedicated forum pages.

High Sierra Backpacking Stories List

I have a long trail of some pretty weird and unique experiences over the course of a life probing Nature. Given enough time, you will find yourself in similar circumstances.

My hope is that you are observing carefully, and not be distracted, when things happen.

Rapidly Changing Natural World: Climate Change in the Sierra

The world is rapidly changing around us as folks put their heads deeper into hand-held digital holes, and see almost none of it, and understand even less. The majority of those who do understand the changes are content to paint their lives, "green," and go on doing exactly the same things that brought us to the destruction of our global ecology.

The requirements of the situation we find ourselves in depend solely upon our values and perceptions as individuals and how we express them as a nation.
